One of the truly interesting things about being in Japan is continual reminders of how disparate the cultures of the U.S. and Japan are. There are, of course, many similarities but the differences are what seems to resonate with us as we get adjusted to our new life in Japan. One big difference is what is seen on television. As we scroll through the 8 local Japanese channels, there is little that reminds us of watching television back in the states. For one thing, there are almost always channels that show several people in small pop-up boxes watching and commenting on what is being seen on the tv screen. It is so common that it seems this is the dominant programming day and night. Another thing that is different is the use of Japanese symbols - you never watch a show without the screen filled without words and symbols placed in random areas. They say one of the reasons for this is that Kanji and symbols will often have a different meaning - funny or impactful - than what is being spoken.
This is a small snippet of a show - I think they are showing a hot springs resort.
A commercial about going to Universal Studios.
A lot of the time, it is hard to figure out what the commercial is about. Here
is an example - we have no idea.
Hahahah! Thank goodness for Netflix, eh?! That bunny commercial is pretty funny. I watched it 3 times! How is Macie and Mona enjoying their schools?
ReplyDeleteI started school yesterday! I don't think it hit me until today.. maybe a little yesterday.. how big of a deal getting my Masters is! I have been approaching it like "Ehh more schooling." But it's really cool.. and I am super fortunate to be able to get a graduate degree and have my work pay for most of it. Idk - it's just crazy how much I was taking this opportunity for granted! Oh well, I am just blabbering on. We miss you guys!
We do have some other channels but not many - and the girls do watch Netflix. The only thing they really watch on the regular t.v. is Pretty Little Liars. That bunny video is hilarious - I laughed so hard the first time I saw it.
DeleteGlad to hear that you are excited about getting your masters. You should be excited - it is a big deal. It will open a lot of doors. And it is very cool that your work is helping pay for it - makes getting the degree a lot easier and quicker. Don't stress and just take it one class at a time.
We miss y'all, too. Everyone sends their love.
